Local cancer charity Penny Brohn UK launch new initiative to safeguard future

Posted on: 22 Jul 2020

The Bristol-based cancer charity have taken a huge financial hit as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

Penny Brohn UK have issued a call to supporters and members of the local community to show their support and get behind the charity, after cancellations of events have led to a projected loss of up to £500,000 in funding.

The team are asking everyone who bought tickets to marquee fundraising events scheduled for this summer - including the Long Table Lunch, Afternoon Tea and Penny Brohn Presents - to consider donating the price rather than requesting a refund.

After more than fifty ticket holders became the first Penny's Pandemicists in the first week of the drive, Penny Brohn are calling on more ticket holders to get involved and support the charity through the months ahead.

Despite the coronavirus crisis and subsequent lockdown severely impacting the range of services Penny Brohn can offer, the team are still dedicated to supporting and caring for people with cancer.

The charity immediately set to work innovating their resilience-building and immune-supporting services to reach as many people as possible remotely following the suspension of face-to-face services in March.

The Penny Brohn at Home scheme was quickly launched, which included a Resilience Room intended to manage the difficulties presented by the lockdown, interactive Nutrition Know-How sessions and the Self-Care Toolbox, designed to guide people through practical self-care techniques at home.

The team also set up a programme of daily guided practices to help manage stress and anxiety as part of The Relaxation Room, ran physical activity sessions, and hosted activities like yoga, dance and a virtual Penny Brohn Choir.

In normal circumstances, Penny Brohn is widely regarded as one of the UK's leading cancer charities, adopting a whole-person approach to cancer support which uses evidence-based therapies alongside treatment to achieve the best possible results.

With over 40 years' experience caring for people affected by cancer, the charity understand that people need more than just medicine to live well with the disease.

Looking ahead, the Penny Brohn team are looking carefully at how they can tackle the impact of coronavirus, particularly given that people affected by cancer need more support than ever through such a difficult period.

Without the ability to raise funds, however, the future of the charity is seriously under threat. With the support of the local community, and a successful Penny's Pandemicists drive, Penny Brohn will be able to continue to help people live well with cancer.
