Colston Hall announces digital music festival

The live streamed festival, titled Bristol Takeover Online, aims to celebrate and support the Bristol music scene. 

 

Missing Bristol’s live music schedule? Want to support the city’s music scene in these uncertain times?

 

Colston Hall, in partnership with an array of Bristol music venues, is helping the city to do just that, with a new digital music festival, Bristol Takeover Online.

 

The festival will see over 20 artists perform via live stream, and has been launched as part of Music Venue Trust’s nationwide #SaveOurVenues campaign.

 

It’s happening over on the Colston Hall YouTube channel on Saturday 23 May, between 15:00 and midnight. (Yep, that's a whole nine hours of live streamed performances!)

From Bristol jazz frontrunners Waldo’s Gift and Ishmael Ensemble to lofi indie/electronica artist Tamu Massif, the lineup features acts from across the local music scene.

 

The just-announced lineup also features the likes of Portishead’s Adrian Utley, pop electronica outfit Paper Dragon and singer songwriter Kate Stapley.

Set to be hosted by BBC introducing in the West’s Sam Bonham and Richard Pitt, the digital festival has been launched in partnership with top Bristol music venues including The Louisiana, The Fleece and The Crofters Rights.

 

The aim? To support and celebrate Bristol music, as part of the nationwide #SaveOurVenues campaign, launched last month by Music Venue Trust.

The #SaveOurVenues campaign notes how, due to the obstacles raised by the coronavirus, 556 grassroots music venues across the country are at imminent risk of permanent closure.

 

The campaign, therefore, aims to raise money for venues in need of support, ensuring no music venue goes under because of the pandemic.

 

A number of Bristol music venues, including The Lousiana, The Old England and The Exchange got behind the campaign upon its launch, and set up individual crowdfunders.

 

Now Colston Hall has joined the #SaveOurVenues fight with Bristol Takeover Online.

 

 

Though the festival is being livestreamed for free, Colston Hall is asking that viewers donate what they might normally spend on a gig ticket to the event’s crowdfunding page.

 

Half of all donations will support participating artists, and the rest will be donated to Bristol music venues, in collaboration with Music Venue Trust.

 

“The impact of the outbreak is likely to last a long time for artists and venues as it will take time to move safely back towards live events, and we want to ensure the Bristol music scene remains as vibrant as ever,” the festival’s crowdfunding page explains.

 

There’s more acts yet to be announced ahead of next weekend’s show, so keep an eye out for updates.

 

Can't make it to the livestream? The broadcast will be available to view on-demand for one week after the event.
