Coronavirus latest: All public events in Bristol cancelled until July

Posted on: 26 Mar 2020

Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees made the announcement yesterday as part of a general update.

All public events are to be cancelled in Bristol until at least July, it was confirmed yesterday. Delivering a message via social media, Marvin Rees confirmed that "we are cancelling all events" due to continued uncertainty in relation to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Volunteering in Bristol.

With the 2020 Harbour Festival due to take place during the affected time frame, as well as popular events like Love Saves The Day, the Great Bristol Run and Bristol Pride, Rees thanked event organisers for their continued cooperation during a difficult period.

With news and updates coming in daily, the Mayor acknowledged that the time scales are subject to change and review, and so events scheduled after July and further into the summer are also being reviewed.

Other updates included an announcement that work is ongoing to ensure bus services and other travel options are running as normally as possible, and that changes are being made to allow NHS workers to park for free during the ongoing health crisis.

Elsewhere, the council are actively recruiting more social workers and encouraging former social workers to return to the sector to deal with extremely high demand. Anyone that can help is asked to get in touch on cypsworkforcedev@bristol.gov.uk.

Foster carers are also in high demand currently, and so prospective carers are asked to contact the council on 0117 353 4200 to discuss options. "We must, in our city, continue to support vulnerable children," the Mayor said in his statement.
