This weekend: discover Gainsborough Square’s shutter murals with one-off event

Posted on: 28 Nov 2019

This weekend, learn about the shutter murals of Gainsborough Square in Lockleaze with a special guided tour and spray-painting workshop.

If you’ve been to Gainsborough Square in Lockleaze, then you might have noticed the shutter murals that decorate its shopfronts after-hours.

Intricate, floral and vibrant; the murals were created by community artists Rob and Sophie Wheeler. They were commissioned to brighten up the appearance of Gainsborough Square.

This weekend, Bristol has the chance to take a guided tour of these shutter paintings, during The Gainsborough Square Shutter Murals Project Exhibition.

Set to take place this Saturday, 30 November 2019 at 15:00, the event will allow people to get up close and personal with the Square’s mural artists and the work itself.

Not only that, but the event will invite attendees to have a go at spray painting and graffiti stencilling and The Hub, the home of Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust.

To create the Square’s murals, Rob and Sophie Wheeler worked closely with local retailers and residents to develop ideas for the designs that were inspired by nature.

The artists led five creative workshops that were attended by over 100 local people and also researched the history of the area and Stoke Park. This weekend, Bristol is invited to The Hub in Gainsborough Square to learn more about the murals.

Kicking off at The Hub at 15:00, attendees are invited to take a guided tour of the shutter paintings in Gainsborough Square; meet the artists and hear the stories behind the designs.

After, attendees can take part in spray-painting and graffiti stencilling workshops at The Hub with Rob and Sophie. Refreshments will be provided!

The event forms part of Fair Saturday, an annual celebration of community organisations and local causes in cities around the world.

The event's organisers will be collecting donations for Lockleaze Neighbourhood trust and Buzz Lockleaze.
