This month's Live Music Highlights list reads almost like a who's who of the Bristol scene; with local artists and collectives ready to take the stage including Waldo's Gift, Young Echo, Breakfast Records and Cousin Kula. Check out our full rundown and get your tickets to some of this month's best live shows below.

The Phantom Ensemble @ The Gallimaufry // Sunday 8th September

Having emerged from Bristol's hip-hop and jazz scenes, The Phantom Ensemble are making waves across the city with their combination of accomplished live instrumentation and sample-based breaks. Made up of producer Simiah, Craig Cofton on sax and Dan Somers on keys, the trio's improvised sound has earned them a monthly residency at The Gallimaufry, allowing them to collaborate with a wide range of Bristol artists including Harriet Riley on vibraphone and guitarist Chalky White. 

 

Waldo's Gift Reworks: ABBA @ The Gallimaufry // Wednesday 11th September

Made up of acclaimed Cousin Kula drummer James Vine, Route2Roots bassist Harry Stoneham and Alun Elliott-Williams on guitar, Waldo's Gift have made a name for themselves with weekly performances at The Gallimaufry on Gloucester Road. The group's Rework nights continue to gain attention from music fans all over the city, and they'll be taking on one of the most popular back catalogues of all time in this one as they rework the iconic music of ABBA.

Breakfast Records presents BREAKFEST @ Thekla // Saturday 14th September

Bristol label Breakfast Records is making sure Thekla comes back with a bang in September with Breakfest, an all-day celebration of some of the most exciting new music coming out of Bristol right now. Featuring Jamie Cruickshank, Langkamer and Wych Elm among a lineup of 15 live acts, you can also expect killer DJ sets from Bristol legend Big Jeff and Turkish Delights and a top-notch atmosphere as Breakfast Records celebrate the return of Thekla in style.

 

Metronomy @ Rough Trade Bristol // Saturday 14th September

English electro-pop outfit Metronomy are playing not one but two shows at Bristol's Rough Trade this month, taking the stage at 2pm and 7pm either side of a signing session on Saturday 14th. Performing in support of their brand-new 17-track studio album, Metronomy Forever, the band's innate skill for blending upbeat funk, energising club sound and unmistakable, esoteric pop is sure to make this one of Rough Trade's highlights of 2019.

Grammy-nominated afrobeat superstar and son of the legendary Fela Kuti, Femi Kuti will be performing live at Bristol's O2 Academy this month, bringing with him an unmissable show as part of his 2019 UK tour. Having released a swathe of albums over the years and collaborated with the likes of Mos Def, Common, Erykah Badu, Damon Albarn and the late Hugh Masekela among others, Kuti is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated Nigerian musical exports of all time. Catch him showcasing his latest album, 2018's One People One World, in Bristol in September.

Certainly one of the most exciting musical collectives operating in Bristol right now, Young Echo are taking over The Cube on Saturday 21st September to bring you a day and night of forward-thinking and boundary-pushing music and sound. Expect stellar live music, shows, DJ sets, A/V sets and more from Veridian Ensemble, Hi5Ghost, Salac, Withdrawn & Birthmark, Daniela Dyson & Alex Randall, Ossia & Max Kelan, Vessel, Boofy, Emz and many more from 1pm-1am.

Cousin Kula live at Hy-Brasil Music Club // Sunday 22nd September

Following on from their first free-entry show at Hy-Brasil Music Club on 29th August, Cousin Kula are back at it this month to help the soon-to-be-closed venue go out in style. The Bristol six-piece have made some of our favourite Bristol tracks of the last year or two, and we can't wait to catch them playing one of the last shows at the much-loved Hy-Brasil.
