New Discovery Trail at Arnos Vale Cemetery in Bristol
Posted on: 22 Jul 2015New Discovery Trail launch for historic Arnos Vale Cemetery in Bristol.
Bristol’s Arnos Vale Cemetery is a place of immense historic importance for Bristolians, and this new Discovery Trail has been released with the hope of widening the understanding of the popular heritage attraction. Accessible to visitors of all ages, this trail will improve the already rich visitor experience of Arnos Vale, and provides a new insight to the landscape.
The trail can be picked up for free at various points around the site, taking the form of a self-led journey of discovery through Arnos Vale, giving some background on the notable historic residents from Bristol’s past. Alongside this, the trail highlights interesting nature present at the site, as part of its own ecosystem, and the varied architecture that ranges from Victorian to modern. Amongst the highlights of the trail are the Great War Memorial, Chatri of Rajah Rummohan Roy and the three public exhibitions which include the new Great War Exhibition located deep in the Anglican Crypt.
Arnos Vale Chief Executive Mike Coe said: “Arnos Vale holds a special place in the hearts of many people in Bristol but most haven’t had a chance to explore this unique oasis in a way that they will now be able. The Discovery Trail aims to help people learn more about the history, architecture and wildlife that make Arnos Vale a place to remember for the city, both as a heritage attraction and as a working cemetery.”
Notable residents include Mary Carpenter, who founded the ‘ragged school’ system in Bristol, providing free education for all, and Captain of the SS Great Britain, James Hosken.
Once visitors have explored the Discovery trail there are a series of specialist self-led tours available from the visitor centre to enjoy alongside the ever popular guided tours which take place every Saturday at 1.30pm.
Entrance to Arnos Vale is completely free, along with the trail, with all donations received on site doubled by the Heritage Lottery Fund until June 2016 and used to secure the future of Arnos Vale for the people of Bristol forever.
