Posted on: 26 May 2014Our Bristol Business of the Week winner this week is the new hair and nail salon Betties + Baldwins that has opened up recently on Small Street in Bristol. 365Bristol chatted to Kadi, Darren and Esme over the weekend and asked them our top ten questions. Here's what they had to say!
1. When did you set up Betties and Baldwins?
We spent all of March renovating our premises, and opened our doors on 1st April.
2. Are you from Bristol?
Yes, Kadi and Darren are Bristol born and bred and Esme moved to Bristol 10 years ago.
3. How's business?
Very encouraging! A lot of our regular clients have moved here with us, we are also getting lots of new customers and positive responses about the salon.
4. Tell us about your business?
We are an independent Hair Salon + Nail Bar situated on Small Street in the Old City area of Bristol. The salon name is a reference from the 90's film Clueless, a Betty is a term used to describe a beautiful woman and Baldwin to describe a handsome guy! We provide a full range of cutting and colouring services for both Betties and Baldwins, using L’oreal Colour, EVO Fabuloso Pro and EVO styling products, as well as Nail care services using CND, including Shellac. Our salon aesthetic is a nod to Beauty Shops of the 50s and 60s, with a punch of 90s decor!
5. How do you find running an independent business in Bristol?
We love it! There are tonnes of independent businesses in Bristol and we are proud to be one of them. When we told people we were starting up, a lot of them said, ‘That’s so Bristol’ so I think Bristol has a reputation for it, more than other cities. It’s a lot of work and can be stressful at times, but sooo worth it!
6. Where do you like to eat out in Bristol?
Grillstock (BBQ), Small St Espresso (Cakes), The Christmas Steps (Dinner), The Big Chill (Dirty Fries), At The Well (Pancakes) and Bagel Boy (..Bagels).
7. What's your favourite place in Bristol?
Here! We spent a lot of time planning exactly what we wanted for Betties + Baldwins, as a place to work, and as a place for our customers to experience. So, we would definitely pick the salon. After work though, cocktails at The Milk Thistle and Dutty Girls’ 90s house party.
8. Where do you see Betties and Baldwins in 5 years time?
Still here on Small Street! We have a lot of room to grow here, so would want to see our business thriving where it started.
9. What advice would you give to any aspiring Bristol small business owners?
Be realistic with your budgeting (and then some!) and regularly refer back to your business plan to keep you on the right track. Oh, and try to have fun with it.
10. If you were Mayor of Bristol for a day which one thing would you change?
We would stage a free outdoor cinema playing all our of favourite films.(Including Clueless!)
