Sunday Lunch Review - The Coach and Horses in Clifton, Bristol

The braised red cabbage was a light and fresh version; perfect for a summer day. The veg was all cooked al dente and had great colour. I absolutely loved the roasties and the Yorkshire. I'd go so far as to say this is the best Yorkie we've had!

Following my phone's directions as we walked to The Coach and Horses, I was expecting a tiny, low building tucked in a narrow road just off Whiteladies; how wrong was I? Just metres from the main road, The Coach and Horses sits in a bright and open square. It is a tall and imposing building, freshly painted and with beautiful flowers everywhere. Inside is lovely too, a quintessential cosy English pub but with bright, fresh touches.

The Coach and Horses keeps it simple on a Sunday – roasts and puds. There's a choice of beef, chicken, pork, lamb and veggie. I very nearly went for the veggie option (a puff pastry parcel filled with mushrooms, brie and cranberries served with a port and redcurrant jus) but at the last minute went for slow cooked pork. Simon had the lamb. All the roasts are served with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, braised red cabbage and steamed seasonal vegetables. On the day we went this was carrots and broccoli.

The braised red cabbage was a light and fresh version; perfect for a summer day. The veg was all cooked al dente and had great colour. I absolutely loved the roasties and the Yorkshire. I'd go so far as to say this is the best Yorkie we've had! It was absolutely home made, crunchy on the top, soft on the bottom. Perfect! I love that a Yorkie comes with every roast. I always feel left out when I order something other than beef and don't get one. The cauliflower cheese was delicious and super cheesy. It was also really great to get it as standard, another generous touch. I really enjoyed the gravy too. A roast can win or lose on its gravy and this was a definite winner. Both meats were tasty and tender, though sadly they were very thinly sliced. We'd both have preferred a chunkier cut to give it more texture.

In addition to the ice creams on the menu, there were two special puddings; pavlova and toffee sponge pudding. I had the pavlova and Simon had a mint choc chip ice cream. The ice cream looked wonderful served in a sundae glass, and the pavlova was beautiful too. I really enjoyed my pavlova. It's such a classic. I loved the addition of kiwi. Simon was very happy with his sundae. Who doesn't love squirty cream and sprinkles?!

What I loved about The Coach and Horses was that it's simple, traditional home-cooked food, and fantastic value. It would be perfect for families and groups, and the impeccable service would make everyone feel welcome.
