Review of Yurt Lush in Bristol - Steak and Story night

Our rating:

The food was well cooked, well-presented and all elements of the dishes worked well together. For just over a tenner for a glass of wine and main meal, I would say Yurt Lush offer a pretty sweet deal for a Wednesday night meal out.

To come across a fully-functioning yurt is unlikely. To come across a fully-functioning yurt, in a car park, is even less likely. And yet Bristol (being the beautifully random city that it is) has one. This 70-seater café/ restaurant is brought to us by the team behind Eat Drink Bristol Fashion.

After emerging as a pop up in 2013, Yurt Lush have managed to establish a real name for themselves as they have successfully churned out hot drinks, lunches and evening meals of the highest quality. Their food suppliers, Story Organic and The Community Farm, pride themselves on their knowledge of exactly how their herds have been bred, fed and reared to the point of slaughter. So you know exactly where your meat is coming from and the conditions it’s been raised in. Guilt-free dining? Always a good thing.

The venue itself is also something to behold. After traipsing about Temple Meads for a little while we eventually arrived at the Creative Common space to find the most idyllic and well, lush, looking restaurant I‘ve ever seen. Outside there are multiple benches and tables which are parted by wooden decking leading to the Yurt’s entrance, all illuminated by outdoor lights. Inside, you are greeted by the welcome heat of a roaring fire which features in the centre of both conjoining yurts. A handful of wooden tables circle around the fires, each decorated with candles and a selection of wild flowers in a vase. Fairy lights are also woven into the seams of the smaller yurt, its transparent walls allowing you to peep outside as you munch on your food.

Aesthetics aside, the reason I came to Yurt Lush on this occasion was to try out their new Steak and Story night which kicked off on the 11th February. A little like their previous Wednesday night steak deal, you are offered a glass of red or white wine but with one of three meat options this time which come with cooked vegetables and/or homemade chips on the side for £12.50.

My beef brisket option was beautifully tender (with a slab of crackling on top) and worked well with the two-types of cooked beetroot, green cabbage and gravy that came with it. I was also thrilled to hear it came on a bed of bubble and squeak which was sublime. As an additional side, I had a bowl of Yurt Lush’s homemade chips; Crispy on the outside and warm and fluffy on the inside, they didn’t disappoint. The sauces that accompanied the chips were also homemade and served in reused jars and drinks bottles which impressed us too.

Though my ‘beef baby’ was growing steadily by the end of our main, we persevered through to dessert, opting for a winterberry and apple crumble to share which was served with homemade vanilla custard. To be honest though, I could have consumed a vat of that custard on its own. It was that good; light in texture and yet creamy in taste. The crumble was also faultless. Packed with roughly chopped seasonal fruit with a generous layer of crumble spread over the top.

Overall, our experience at Yurt Lush was extremely positive. The food was well cooked, well-presented and all elements of the dishes worked well together. Though my companion thought his steak was a little underdone.

For just over a tenner for a glass of wine and main meal, I would say Yurt Lush offer a pretty sweet deal for a Wednesday night meal out. The staff were really friendly and the atmosphere was totally relaxed. Just watch out for those outdoor toilets, it’s pretty nippy in there at this time of year!

Yurt Lush, you certainly live up to your name. I take my hat off to you.
