Mortal Kombat X PS4 Review

After four long years since the last Mortal Kombat game that rebooted the franchise on the 7th generation of consoles we finally get a brand new experience on the PS4 and Xbox One in the form of Mortal Kombat X which is the best, most violent game and a graphical marvel to look at.

Mortal Kombat X is a game that shows fighting games at home are not obsolete.

Mortal Kombat X’s story takes place 25 years after the last game so some of your fan favourites such as Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade will be much older. The new generation of fighters have to step in to help defend Earthrealm from the evil of Shinock and Quan Chi most of the new fighters are offspring’s of existing characters such as Cassie Cage. There is also a political struggle in the story in the realm of Outworld where the new emperor Kotal Khan who is like an Aztec warrior has to tackle a civil war with the previous emperor’s daughter Mileena. What I like about the Mortal Kombat games is that they bother to include a story mode which most one on one fighters seem to neglect which adds more value for your money which I think other fighting franchises should take note from Mortal Kombat X.

Gameplay wise it is the fastest and smoothest Mortal Kombat game that I’ve played improving on all aspects from the last game back in 2011 such as graphical fidelity and the brutal X-ray moves to the Fatalities which are gorier than ever which may make wince a bit. You can really tell that they took advantage of the PS4 with the gore and yeah the violence may up set people, but it’s so over the top that it’s unbelievable and humorous because Mortal Kombat has always had the dark humour with the Fatalities. The finishing moves are fairly easy to execute and it’s a great way to rub your victory in your opponents face, Brutalities make a comeback from Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 these finishers are basically your standard combos but they end with you opponent exploding in viscerally satisfying way.

Each character has three variations which change up how you fight for example Scorpion my favourite character has Ninjutsu which is fast pace fighting and utilises dual swords, Hellfire which adds more fire based attacks and Inferno which lets you summon demonic denizens to grab your opponents. It adds to the gameplay and changes it up.

Mortal Combat X reviewed for PS4

In the tower modes you have several towers; you have the traditional towers where you do the normal stuff that would partake in this mode where you take on several fighters until you get to the boss, fairly standard stuff. Then you have the other towers such as Test Your Luck where it has random stipulations with each fight, Survival where you have to survive as long as you can because your health bar doesn’t replenish after a fight and Endless where you take on an endless wave of fighters until you die. There are also living towers which change every day, week or month, like the Test You Luck towers there’ll be certain stipulations and will change over time which speaks by its name. All these towers will keep you entertained and challenged for a few weeks especially the living ones.

Review of Mortal Combat X for PS4

Now multiplayer there seems to be a bigger emphasis with online because as soon you boot the game up for the first time you are greeted with a screen where you have to select a faction where it will contribute to the online faction war where you’ll see the outcome to the war every week. The multiplayer is great and all but it doesn’t do too much to deter from the last game as it has the verses mode, team battles and King of The Hill which is fine, but I wanted something more. The main problem I had with the multiplayer at the time of reviewing it is that it takes too long to connect to online and you have to reconnect to online after every match and it gets old really fast, it also takes too long to find an opponent.
