Catch 22 really is the best catch when it comes to plating up superlative fish and chips to the Bristol multitudes, representing sensational value for money for hearty portions of faultless, high quality fish and chips.
There might be a raft of fish and chip shops in and around Bristol but none of them come close to the sheer magnificence of the quality fare being served up at Catch 22 on College Green.
Its prime location in the centre and stone's throw distance from the harbourside has meant that, since opening a few months ago, business has gone from strength to strength. The Grade II listed building Catch 22 is housed in is one of the area's more prominent and intriguing buildings. Dating back to the early 1900s, over the years, it has played host to a cafe, upmarket arts and crafts restaurant and council offices.
The owners of Catch 22 have utilized and maximised the space of the building incredibly well, with an impressively sized open kitchen and counter to order at the front and a diner-style restaurant at the back fitted out with on-trend filament bulbs, wall-mounted side lights, reclaimed wood tables and black leather banquette seating.
The restaurant and take away has an impressive menu too with starters, mains and desserts, and in addition to fish and chips you can order burgers, Greek salads, steaks and Pie Minister pies. There's also an outstanding variety of fish on offer with cod, haddock, lemon sole, rock, calamari and scampi available when we visited.
My dad and I went for the battered cod served with double cooked chips and salad garnish (£6.40 to take away, £10.95 to eat in). It was a fantastic fishy feast, the grease-free, light and crispy batter cracking open to reveal perfectly white, creamy, moist, thick flakes of consummately cooked cod, while the chips were fluffy and golden potato perfection. Washed down with a bottle of ice cold Coca Cola in one of the authentic glass bottles (£2.40), the portion was so generous and gargantuan we had to abandon any conceivable thought of a dessert.
Dished up by convivial, enthusiastic staff, Catch 22 really is the city's best catch when it comes to plating up superlative fish and chips to the Bristol multitudes, representing sensational value for money for hearty portions of faultless, high quality fish and chips.
