It’s hard to believe that there are some games that are turning 10 years old this year, with titles such as Grand Theft Auto IV, Metal Gear Solid 4, Far Cry 2 and the game I’m talking about in this review Burnout Paradise. EA remastered the game to celebrate 10 years since its initial release back in 2008 on the Xbox 360 and PS3, is it worth picking up again to burn rubber on the streets of Paradise City? Yes absolutely.

Burnout Paradise Remastered Xbox Game review

Burnout Paradise does not concern itself with a narrative because well it’s a racing game, it introduces you to Paradise City, dumps you into a car and the world is yours to explore and crash into. This was 2008 where games were not really that concerned with telling compelling stories, but instead gives a great gameplay experience with sandboxes that you can mess around in on your own or with friends.

The game wastes no time with getting you into the action and you’re on the streets of Paradise City in your banger of a car which you have to repair, after that you can do anything you want. Do you want to drive around the city smashing billboards and fences which act as the games collectables; you can do that, want to do just do takedown events? You can do that. That’s what I like about Burnout Paradise it is open ended, it doesn’t force you to do specific events to unlock new cars, you just have to fulfil a quota of wins and it doesn’t matter what events you enter.

Let’s talk about what chaos you can get involved in Paradise City, you have your standard races which are fun as the speeds you can hit are insane and seem somewhat implausible. Takedown is the Burnout series staple, what you have to do in this mode is cause your opponents to crash which is immensely satisfying because of the incredible detail of the crashes as you see shrapnel fly everywhere. There is Marked Man where you have to drive to a destination as you’re being hunted down by black cars, and they don’t mess around and will absolutely destroy you if you’re not paying attention. You have stunt run which is one of my favourites as you have to rack up a score doing various tricks, which can vary from barrel rolls, gaining height from jumps, drifting around corners as well as just going fast without hitting anything.

You can also take the chaotic driving online with your friends and can I say it is a lot of fun with other players, you can make your own fun in the open world as well as destroying your friends in races. You and 7 other players can take to the streets of Paradise City with your vehicles of destruction and cause chaos by destroying each other’s machines.

The game has a bump in visual quality with a stable framerate, where the crashing scenes will now play in 60 frames per second rather than 30. You may think the game does not look all that different to original release but you have to look at the finer details. There is more shrapnel flying off your car when you do 10 barrel rolls through the air, more sparks igniting the road as you scrape your bumper to more details on the cars in general. If you have a PS4 Pro or Xbox One X you can take advantage of those machines and run the game in a native 4K resolution for an extremely crisp image to witness crashes in even more detail.

It was great to revisit Burnout Paradise, it’s a racing game that doesn’t care about realism with its driving, and instead it cares about fun as you throw your care around a corner at a 90 degree angle. This is a must buy even if you have played it on previous generation machines, plus it helps it comes with all the downloadable content so you’re getting a lot of content for your money. Grab some friends and burn some rubber on the streets of Paradise City.
