Sofar Sounds are hosting intimate live shows across Bristol this summer

Posted on: 11 Jul 2022

With a special performance taking place at the UK’s longest continually running theatre this week, Sofar will be putting on an array of local artists at beautiful local venues throughout July and August.

The Bristol Old Vic show (hosted at the theatre's Weston Studio) is set to take place this Wednesday.

Sofar Sounds take a distinctive and unusual approach to their shows, allowing gig-goers to view the geographical area of an event well in advance but they do not disclose the venue or performing artists until 36 hours before.

Tickets for the Bristol Old Vic gig on Wednesday 13 July are on sale now for £16, with a ‘bring a friend free offer’ currently in place. Head to the event page to grab yours.

Music events start-up company Sofar Sounds was formed in London in 2009. Consisting of a community of artists and organisers, the group set about creating secret, intimate concerts featuring some of the world’s most promising musical talent.

Sofar gigs always feature three exciting artists from a range of different genres; these tend to be acts that would not normally be matched together on an average lineup. Typically, a Sofar Sounds show sees an eclectic selection of musicians each playing a stripped-back, vulnerable version of their live show.

Paired with the unusual gig spaces used (including hair salons, co-working spaces, historical buildings and living rooms), these carefully curated nights tend to be something. Indeed, the most recent Bristol show saw LGBTQ+ artists perform at boutique plant shop Mila Plants in Broadmead.

These unusual features create an atmosphere that is unique to Sofar’s programme, a distinctiveness that has seen the music events company host regular shows all over the world.

Sofar clearly have a keen ear when it comes to picking artists with the likes of Khruangbin, Bastille and Kae Tempest all making appearances at their events before they made it big. See below for a video of Sofar’s massive Paintworks show from earlier in the year.

Throughout the summer, Sofar have a range of exciting events planned for all over Bristol and the venue for the next show has already been announced - this Wednesday (13 July) a selection of secret musicians will take to the Bristol Old Vic stage.

July sees a show in St Pauls on Saturday 16 July with a note to bring your own booze, followed by the City Centre on Thursday 21 July before a show in Clifton on Sunday 24 July.

First up in August is a night at Arnos Vale on Thursday 4 (also bring your own beer), followed by a City Centre show on Thursday 18 before the current schedule of events is rounded off with another show in the Centre the next day.

The venue for all these shows will be announced 36 hours before, head to the Sofar Sounds website for more information.
