Jamaica Street Studios’ annual open day is just around the corner

Located just off Stokes Croft, the three-floor creative hub will be opening its doors to the public over the coming weekend, kicking off with an evening event on Friday.

 

Jamaica Street Studios is one of the largest creative-led artist studios outside of London and has been housing members of Bristol’s burgeoning artistic community for over 20 years.

 

The jam-packed weekend (Friday 8 July till Sunday 10 July) will include beers and a boogie at Jamaica Street Stores followed by an afterparty on Friday and the return of the famous Open Studios Art Auction on Sunday. Get your bids in early here.

 

 

Jamaica Street Studios houses over thirty visual creatives in its large site and provides facilities for a range of artistic practices, including painting, installations, printmaking, sculpture and textiles.

 

One of the most high-profile current residents is Christopher Wright and his Turbo Island clothing label. His vibrant, offbeat illustrations have become a Bristol staple, making their way onto various event posters, and even appeared onstage at Glastonbury this year – worn by Squid’s Ollie Judge.

 

Wright is by no means the only exciting artist who will be opening his doors this weekend, with the likes of fellow illustrators Dave Bain and Anna Higgie; sculptor Dorcas Casey and multi-disciplinary artist Rebecca J Lesley just a few of the other creatives working on Jamaica Street.

The weekend of Open Studios begins at 19:00 this Friday (8 July) with drinks and dancing at the nearby Jamaica Street Stores. Then, at 22:30, the celebrations continue with an afterparty at the same venue.

 

The event will feature sets from Bristol-based DJs and Noods Radio residents BEX and Waxmouse as well as Psychotherapy Sessions resident and Livity Sounds alumni, Jurango. Tickets for the afterparty can be found on Headfirst.

 

Doors of the studios will be open for the public to explore across the weekend from 11:00 till 17:00 and at 16:00 on Sunday 10 July the famed Art Auction will take place.

Those willing to take part have the option to attend the auction in person or can enter their highest proxy bid to ensure they get the art that they want - bids can be placed here.

 

It is important for visitors to note that Jamaica Street Studios are only accessible via stairs.
