Her new album "A Complicated Woman" is due for release on 25 April 2025 and has been described by the Guardian as her best yet. A Complicated Woman contains all Taylor’s musical thumbprints – complex thought processes unfolding in real time, an effortless knack of exposing the feelings women are required to labour under – but set on a larger, brighter landscape that is nothing short of exhilarating. Running through the album is a jubilant choir constructed of dozens and dozens of mostly female voices - “a community of people. I want you to hear and feel the connection” - including close friends, her band and collaborators, that includes - but is not limited to - singer-songwriters Nadine Shah, Moonchild Sanelly and Sue Tompkins from Life Without Buildings; Meatball and a bona fide Lancaster legend, the actress Julie Hesmondhalgh.
About Self Esteem
Rebecca Lucy Taylor, known professionally as Self Esteem, is a British singer-songwriter and actress acclaimed for her candid exploration of themes such as self-worth, feminism, and personal empowerment. Born on October 15, 1986, in Rotherham, England, Taylor's musical journey began as one half of the indie duo Slow Club. In 2017, she embarked on a solo career under the moniker Self Esteem, marking a significant shift towards a more pop-oriented and experimental sound.
Her debut solo album, Compliments Please (2019), introduced audiences to her distinctive style, characterized by robust drum rhythms, choral arrangements, and forthright lyrics. However, it was her sophomore release, Prioritise Pleasure (2021), that garnered widespread critical acclaim. The album was lauded for its unflinching honesty and was nominated for the 2022 Mercury Prize.
In 2022, Taylor composed the soundtrack for the West End production of Suzie Miller's play Prima Facie, starring Jodie Comer. The play, which addresses themes paralleling those in Prioritise Pleasure, received the award for Best New Play at the 2023 Laurence Olivier Awards.
Despite her professional successes, Taylor has been open about her personal struggles with burnout and depression. In a 2025 interview, she reflected on the emotional toll of relentless work and the pressure to meet industry expectations. These experiences have profoundly influenced her upcoming third album, A Complicated Woman, which delves into themes of defiance and vulnerability.
Taylor's music is renowned for its direct and confessional lyrics, tackling subjects such as relationships, self-criticism, and societal pressures. Her live performances are equally compelling, featuring choreographed routines that underscore her commitment to delivering an engaging and thought-provoking experience.
Through her artistry, Self Esteem continues to challenge societal norms and advocate for self-love and authenticity, solidifying her position as a significant voice in contemporary British music.
