Bristol's Live Picks: 13th - 19th February

Posted on: 13 Feb 2017

A good week for the guitar is forecast in Bristol as the next seven days belongs to the boys (and girls) in the band. Ranging from pugnacious post-punk to polished pop, however, there is plenty of musical variety on offer. Feast your ears.

Modern Baseball - Bierkeller, 13.02

Modern Baseball

Modern Baseball’s output has been consistently knocking it out of the park ever since their inception at Philadelphia University in 2012. Their five years together have spawned three records of near perfect pop-punk-influenced indie rock, which have seen them make several home runs around the States but rarely crossing the Atlantic for a scrimmage. Their show at the Bierkeller therefore represents a rare opportunity to catch the four-piece in typically athletic action.

Kate Nash - Thekla, 14.02

Kate Nash

Fans of The Inbetweeners, Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging and pretty much anything that came out in the late noughties will know Kate Nash for the song ‘Foundations’, the insanely catchy lovelorn two fingers which came out in 2007. In the decade since, Nash has re-established herself as something of a riot grrrl with some success - rumour has it she even started a ‘F*** Trump!’ chant at her Sheffield gig - how punk rock is that!

Tegan and Sara - O2, 15.02

Tegan and Sara

Identical twins Tegan and Sara Quin have been knocking around since the turn of the millennium, and have been turning out albums of quality, pristine pop music ever since - it was even them who gave voice to The Lego Movie anthem, ‘Everything is AWESOME’. Their latest effort, 2016’s Love You to Death is no exception and sees them exploring similar themes of desire and attraction to critical acclaim. Their show at the O2 might be the last chance to see them before they fall into the remit of stadium tours.

Cabbage - Thekla, 18.02

Cabbage

Filthier than the transcript of a Frankie Boyle phone call to his internet provider, feral post-punks Cabbage have made quite the impact when they crashed into Manchester’s live circuit in 2015. Channelling their razor-sharp word-play and rambunctious riffing into irreverent live shows, they now embark on their largest UK tour to date, which sees them swing aboard HMS Thekla on Saturday.

Cousin Kula - The Louisiana, 18.02

Cousin Kula

Cousin Kula are the Bristol-based sextet who make music which they themselves describe as ‘psychedelic-world-jazz’. They are also one of the hottest bands operating out of the city at the moment. Offering a curveball line-up which throws a trombone and sax to the more traditional guitar/bass/keys/drums combination, their new song ‘Ode To Lyle’ is a shimmering piece of psych-pop which is more than an apt reflection of their wonderful live set.
