Observer-Commended Sunday Lunch at Hope and Anchor

Observer-Commended Sunday Lunch at Hope and Anchor

Posted on: 09 Dec 2016

The only thing that beats the selection of drink at the Hope and Anchor, the gem of Jacob's Wells Road, is their food, with the pub running up in the Observer's 2010 search for the country's best Sunday lunch.

Hope and Anchor

The Hope and Anchor is a pub that still feels like a pub, and fiercely champions the sentiment which keeps it as such. Offering quality produce in charming surroundings, you would generally expect to pay through the nose to treat your mouth - not here though, where prices have been frozen at the 2010 level.

That was a very good year for the pub, during which they were deservedly recognised by the Observer, who named them a national runner up in their Food Monthly Readers' Awards for best Sunday lunch. Said food and drink (they offer a wide selection of the choicest real ales and wines, in their own words "in three unsurprising colours") can be enjoyed either in their cosy interior or out back in the famed beer garden.

Their no nonsense attitude extends to televisions, fruit machines and pool tables - all of which are eschewed in favour of a genial atmosphere, perpetuated by owner Pete who has been keeping the place in shape for over 20 years.

Whilst walk-ins are welcomed, it is prescient to book ahead to avoid disappointment - particularly on Sundays. To book a table, give them a buzz on 0117 929 2987 or visit them at their website. For Christmas bookings, drop them a line at christmas@hopeanchorbristol.com.
