The 13 Best Pizzas in Bristol

Posted on: 20 Apr 2016

Whether the crust is thin or thick, the topping loaded with pepperoni or simply smothered with cheese and tomato, the allure of these doughy discs of topping-sprinkled deliciousness is often just too good to resist. Here's Bristol's best...

There are so many marvelous pizza emporiums right here on our doorstep in Bristol that we don't have to travel to Naples or Rome to sample the flavoursome delights of one of Italy's most famous (and delicious) signature dishes.

So pop on The Godfather soundtrack and start some serious salivating as we whisk you through our guided tour of some of the best pizza venues in the city. For a pizza the action, you really couldn't ask for more. Bellissimo!

The Stable - Anchor Square, Canon's Rd, Harbourside, Bristol, BS1 5UH Tel: 0117 927 9999

The Harbourside's most famous pizza and cider pit-stop is the perfect place for one of your favourite dough-based products and a few pints of fermented apple juice to wash it all down with. With its cool, stripped-back warehouse decor, The Stable is big, brash, fun and packed with a mouthwatering range of pizzas (The Longhorn Jim and The Blazing Saddle are highly recommended) and an eye-popping range of ciders. There's a good selection of veggie, vegan and gluten-free options too.

The Golden Lion - 244 Gloucester Road, Bristol, BS7 8NZ Tel: 0117 924 6449

The perfect afternoon or post-work spot; The Golden Lion for a pizza. Their stonebaked circles of tomato and cheese delights are quickly becoming legendary around these parts. Some great options are available and all washed down with a pint for just a tenner. The pizzas have had rave reviews and 365Bristol are happy to recommend them.

Hope and Anchor- 38 Jacob's Wells Rd, Bristol, Avon BS8 1DR  Tel: 0117 929 2987

Not content with being a wonderful, cosy, proper boozer that pours some of the best beers, real ales and fine wines, plates up some of the finest pub grub, dishes up a now legendary Sunday roast and boasts a marvelous 3-tiered garden, this independent freehouse also serves a delicious range of stone-baked pizzas. From the simple Margherita to the lip-smacking pulled pork and caramelised onion, their 10" thin crust creations use traditional Italian recipes for authentic tastes and flavours that will make you want to come back time and time again.

The Lanes - 22 Nelson Street, Bristol, BS1 2LE Tel: 0117 325 1979

As the name suggests, this place is perfect for a spot of city-centre bowling. But what you might not know is that they serve some of the best pizzas around. They serve 12 inch and huge 18 inch versions of their awesome offerings and we can't think of a better way to re-fuel after a hard slog bowling.

A Cappella cafe & pizzeria - 184C Wells Rd, Avon, Bristol BS4 2AL Tel: 0117 971 3377

One of Totterdown's - and Bristol's, for that matter - oldest pizzerias, A capella has been consistently and reassuringly popular with pizza lovers and couples in the city. Snugly located behind the Totterdown church, its BYO policy and pizzas made by a Naples-trained chef means what you're getting is the authentic, real deal, reinforced over the years by a whole menagerie of prestigious food awards and accolades.

The Sportsman - Nevil Rd, Bristol, City of Bristol BS7 9EQ Tel: 0117 942 7525

Part sports bar, part proper boozer, The Sportsman just off Gloucester Road probably wouldn't be the first place you'd head to when contemplating chowing down on quality cuisine - but trust us, its pizzas are really something to write home about. At £7 for one or £12 for two, the price is as delicious as the pizzas themselves. The extensive range of tantalizing toppings for these stone-baked sensations include asparagus, halloumi and pulled pork. And if you don't like the idea of being surrounded by a gaggle of rowdy footie fans, you can take it away. Win win, then.

Beerd - 57-159 St. Michaels Hill, Cotham, Bristol BS2 8DB Tel: 0117 974 3567

By the time you've climbed the summit of St Michael's Hill you'll feel you've earned your right for one of the best pizzas in the city -  an accolade Beer can proudly and quite justifiably boast. Popular with students and NHS workers (who get a 10% discount on food and drink), it's a spirited, no-nonsense venue where you can wash down a handmade pizza with one of their fabulous bottled craft beers.

Flour and Ash - 203B Cheltenham Rd, Bristol BS6 5QX Tel: 0117 908 3228

It didn't take long for this Cheltenham Road pizza operation to gain positive word of mouth for its superlative pizzas. No small wonder either, as the dough is left for 72 hours to prove, ensuring a sensationally chewy, light base, while their toppings range from the basic Margherita to the more indulgently hedonistic aged fillet of beef with Old Winchester cheese.

Napolita Pizza -  83 Mina Rd, Bristol BS2 9XP Tel: 0117 941 4333

A tucked-away treat of a pizzeria in St Werburghs, Napolita's wood-fired circular sensations are really worth checking out. It operates a BYO, no corkage free policy too which means you can quaff to your heart's content as you engorge on the pizza of your choice, be it sprinkled with toppings such as parma ham, crispy duck, caramelised peppers or artichokes. We know; our mouths are watering too.

Bertha's - Various locations around Bristol

Bertha's is a pop-up pizza endeavour set up and run by husband and wife team Graham and Kate Faragher, and the business has now become so popular that you can expect a enthusiastic throng of pizza-craving punters lining up wherever they go. Their ethos is rooted in good, simple food done well and using locally sourced ingredients. You can keep an eye on their peripatetic meanderings to see where they'll be next on their Twitter page, and they're often frequent visitors to Sunday's market at the Tobacco Factory.

Zero Zero - 2B High St, Bristol, UK BS5 6DL Tel: 0117 951 0265

A refreshingly quirky addition to the city's pizza scene, Zero Zero prides itself on using top quality produce from local suppliers and offering take-away or dine-in options for its awesome range of stone-baked pizzas. Toppings occasionally, and rather delightfully, err on the more eclectic, unorthodox side too, such as squash, sage and pine nuts. Its buffalo wings (regular, hot or stupid!) have become legendary too. Assisted by one of the many wines, beers and ciders, Zero Zero is a cool, lively addition to the city's pizza scene.

Bocabar - Paintworks Central Trading Estate, Bath Rd, Paintworks, Bristol BS4 3EH Tel: 0117 972 8838

Very often home to the throng of young creatives who work nearby and yummy mummy's animatedly gossiping over a coffee, Bocabar is a funky, lively and comfortable warehouse style venue that's always busy no matter what time of day it is. The menu covers breakfasts, salads and Sunday roasts, but the main culinary attraction is their spectacular and delicious range of pizzas, covering the gamut from meat-heavy to veggie-friendly. The large, plump leather sofas are particularly comfy too.
