Cary Grant Comes Home to Bristol

Cary Grant Comes Home to Bristol

Posted on: 15 Jul 2014

Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th October will see Bristol celebrating its close link to Hollywood actor Cary Grant.

Cary Grant was born in Bristol in 1904. He attended Bishop Road Primary and Fairfield Grammar School and got his first taste of theatre at the Bristol Hippodrome. In 1920 he sailed to New York, working on the Broadway stage before making a name for himself in Hollywood. Cary Grant became a global movie star, but his love for Bristol remained, seeing him return many times in his life and cite it as close to his heart.

Named the second Greatest Male Star Of All Time (after Humphrey Bogart), he was presented an Honorary Oscar at the 42nd Academy Awards by Frank Sinatra "for his unique mastery of the art of screen acting with the respect and affection of his colleagues". Grant was a favourite of Alfred Hitchcock, who hailed him as "the only actor I ever loved in my whole life", leading him to star in many classic Hitchcock films. Undoubtedly a Bristolian worth celebrating, this weekend of homage to one of Hollywoods most important men will be a visual feast not to be missed.

The weekend will include talks, performances, screenings and tours, culminating in a glamorous double bill film gala showing North by Northwest and Arsenic and Old Lace on the biggest screen in Bristol. This will be hosted at the Bristol Hippodrome, the place where Cary Grant got his first taste for the theatrical life.

More details will be made available as events are confirmed.
