The Ultimate Triathlon at The Cube Cinema - Review

Excellent movie, and an important one because it reminds you how far we humans can push ourselves, and how it's best to act now rather than later.

What better way to document an evening centred around one man's superhuman physical and mental feat of endurance than to send 365Bristol's resident fitness expert Nick Clay of Clay Fitness along. Here's what he thought of the event and the film itself...

The Cube Cinema was the Bristol venue for the final UK screening of The Ultimate Triathlon, a documentary film about Luke Tyburski, who astonishingly attempted to travel 2000km from Spain to Morocco in twelve days, yes you heard me right, 2000km in twelve days. He swam, cycled and ran the distance and committing the crowdfunded project to film was a delicious idea indeed. If you are interested in the limits of the human body and mind then it's definitely worth a watch, without a doubt.

The Ultimate Triathlon at The Cube Cinema - Review

The Project arose when Luke was suffering a deep depression; he had a moment of clarity and it was then he realized he needed to do something to inspire himself and others, do something bigger than himself, and show that the human body and mind can withstand a lot of punishment before it starts second guessing itself.

The movie was great in the sense that it didn't go out of its way to be fancy, or particularly funny (although there was some intentional and definitely some unintentional comedy throughout). The goal was really to document as realistically as possible this gigantic feat and it worked very well, point and shoot, so to speak. The supporting cast all chipped in, did their bit and kept Luke well fed, but the focus was predominantly on Luke for the duration of the film. Watching someone get closer to achieving a dream, and observing the gradual wear and tear it has on them is something we find fascinating yet completely inspiring. Everything was clear and concise, the whole journey is narrated to emphasise throughout the Godzilla sized task that Luke had taken on, but there were extra layers that presented themselves as the film wore on. One funny moment for me was when Luke was moaning about the task ahead and one of his crew reminded him "It was your idea!".

Here's a trailer for the film itself:

Like any good adventure story it has pitfalls and unseen battles that spring up throughout, but that's obviously what makes it so enthralling - it's welcome unpredictability and in my opinion everyone in the film deals with this in admirable fashion, not crumbling under the pressure as they say they are a support unit for Luke to get him to the finish line.

Excellent movie, and an important one because it reminds you how far we humans can push ourselves, and how it's best to act now rather than later. It's more about the journey Luke has made in his own mind over the past few years than the scenery and backdrop he travels through during this profound and uplifting project.

The event was rounded off by a Q&A afterwards, which expanded on some of the stuff touched on in the film. Someone asked "Do you think your mindset is damaging?" to which Luke agreed it is, but that's the theme running through the film, and life really, throwing yourself into the deep end sometimes makes for a great story.

5/5
