Dying Light is a game that caught me by surprise because if you know me personally or see me talk about games on Twitter, etc I find zombie games to be the white noise of creativity. Why is this game so good? Well it’s because for once in a zombie game it’s fun and not awkward like other games, it just plops you in an open world with parkour skills and lets you go nuts.

Dying Light Review

Dying Light takes place in a fictional city in the Middle East called Hurran which has been taken over by a virus that has turned the residents into flesh eating zombies. You play as Kyle Crane who has been sent in to obtain a file, which is in possession of the local warlord. This is great because you don’t just fight the undead, you also fight humans who are trying to survive just like you, and this adds an extra layer of tension. When you find a survivor on your travels you’re met with a moral dilemma: do you rescue the survivor and take them back to base? Or do you kill them and steal their supplies?

Gameplay is in a first person perspective which really immerses you in the world. You run around doing quests for survivors which can range from rescuing people from zombies or bandits to delivering packages which is fun because you try and do it as fast as you can as you leap from rooftop to rooftop.

As you travel the world you’ll upgrade your skills and they’re split up into three categories. You have ‘survivor’ which improves maximum health and how fast you can craft items, ‘agility’ which improves your free running skills and ‘power’ which increases how much damage you can do to enemies. How you level up each skill tree is very simple, so if you want to increase power all need to do is kill enemies and you get experience points, same with agility just free run across rooftops. I like this because it lets you craft your own play style rather than the game putting you on a set path.

Day and night really play a big part in this game, especially night time because at night you have zombies that are more aggressive and will chase you for miles. You can stun them with a UV light which will burn their skin, but the best option with these zombies is to run. Night time is very risky, but it is high reward because you earn double XP points which give you an incentive to go out at night.

The presentation in this game is absolutely beautiful. Ranging from huge urban environments to destroyed suburbs with lush fields and trees which sway in the wind. This world is truly believable with its graphics. There is some care and attention with the amount of detail in this world. The detail with the violence is very graphic with each body part coming apart as you deal a critical blow which makes the combat viscerally satisfying as you smash a zombie’s head off.

Dying Light is a fantastic game and it caught me by surprise because I had very low expectations when I started playing this game - it exceeded my expectations. If you missed it last year pick up this version because it comes with all the downloadable content including the new expansion ‘The Following’. It also has improved graphics from the original as well. It’s a fresh take on the zombie genre and I highly recommend picking this game up.
