Rhiannon Giddens at The Colston Hall in Bristol on Saturday 18 November 2017

Rhiannon Giddens will perform at The Colston Hall in Bristol on Saturday 18 November 2017.

Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and Grammy Award-winner Rhiannon Giddens has ‘a peerless and powerful voice’ (Pitchfork), described by the New York Times as ‘a perpetually soulful marvel’. Moving effortlessly between ‘gospel holler, tender folk song, and (…) country ballad’ (Guardian), Giddens puts her own raw and heart-wrenching mark on songs by Patsy Cline, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Nina Simone and others.

Following international acclaim for her first solo album, for which she received the BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year award, Giddens’ second offering, Freedom Highway, ‘collides the past and the present’ (Uncut), combining new songs with old and her unique vocals with an authentic bluegrass spirit.

Rhiannon Giddens is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Known initially as a founding member of the Grammy Award-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, she won international critical acclaim for her debut album ‘Tomorrow Is My Turn’ (2015), which also earned a Grammy nomination. She received the BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year Award, and the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Bluegrass and Banjo. She recorded and co-produced her second album ‘Freedom Highway’ in Louisiana with Dirk Powell, playing alongside a collection of local musicians from the bayou, her touring band and and a brass section from New York. It was named Uncut’s Album of the Month following its release in February 2017.
