Czech Philharmonic Orchestra at Colston hall in Bristol on Sunday 11th February 2018

The Czech Philharmonic’s historic first concert in 1896 saw the most celebrated Czech musical son, Antonín Dvo?ák, take to the podium to conduct the ensemble in his famous Symphony No. 9 (The ‘New World’ Symphony). The great composers Mahler, Grieg and Stravinsky have all since conducted the orchestra. Since its foundation, the orchestra has built a considerable reputation for itself in concert halls across Europe, and become the premier Czech orchestra.

The Czech Philharmonic’s current Chief Conductor, Ji?í B?lohlávek, was first appointed in 1990, and led the ensemble until his departure in 1992. In 2012 he returned to the Czech Philharmonic. Previous Chief Conductors have included Rafael Kubelík, Karel An?erl, and  Vladimir Ashkenazy. The Czech Philharmonic has won many awards, ten Grand Prix du Disque de l’Académie Charles Cros, five Grand Prix du Disque de l’Académie française and several Cannes Classical Awards.
