Colonel Hadfield became a worldwide popular personality during his 21 years as an astronaut, three spaceflights and 2600 orbits of Earth. He is utilizing the strength of social media in such a way as to make the outer space accessible to the millions and is filling our consciousness with wonder which has not been felt since Neil Armstrong firstly stepped on the moon. He has been called as “the most famous astronaut since Neil Armstrong”. And today also he takes the pain to bring the marvel of science in our everyday lives.

 

He is “first” in many things, in 1992 selected by the Canadian Space Agency as NASA Mission Specialist which makes him Canada’s first fully-qualified Space Shuttle crew member. On Shuttle Atlantis, he became the first Canadian to operate Canadarm in space and not only this he was the first Canadian to aboard on Russian Spacecraft as he helped in building space station “Mir”. In 2001 on Shuttle Endeavour, he was the first Canadian to perform two spacewalks and again in 2013 he was made the Commander of ISS hence making him the first and only Canadian to command a spaceship.

 

In his multi-dynamic career, he has done many marvelous things, like living on the ocean floor, NASA’s Director of Operation in Russia, intercepting the Soviet bombers in Canadian Airspace and lastly has recorded science and music videos which are now having millions of hits.

 

Colonel has many awards to add to his career which includes The Order of Canada, NASA Exceptional Service Medal, and The Meritorious Service Cross. He was also the Top Test Pilot in US Navy as well as in US Air Force and has been in the Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame.

 

Author of two international bestselling books, You are here and An astronaut’s guide to life on earth and he has been commemorated on Canadian Postage Stamps, Canada’s newest five dollar bill (along with fellow astronaut Steve MacLean and Dave Williams.) and has been on Royal Canadian Mint coins.
