Two digital dub legends are coming to Bristol next week

Mad Professor, a hero of second-gen dub, and Sister Aisha, “The First Lady of Dub”, are coming to Bristol next month.

Reggae, and dub in particular, has a truly legendary pantheon of names that sit amongst it – and among those hallowed artists, Mad Professor and Sister Aisha sit high.

Guyanese-born Neil Joseph Stephen Fraser, better known as ‘Mad Professor’, is a disciple and torchbearer of the practically-divine Lee “Scratch” Perry. He earned his moniker in his youth due to his fascination with electronics – a fascination he put to good use as one of the most important forces bringing dub to the digital age.

MP was, as mentioned, both a contemporary and a student of Lee “Scratch” Perry, first collaborating with him in 1983 for the album Mystic Warrior – but going forward to collaborate on a further nine albums up until 2001.

Touring with him, Sister Aisha – sometimes simply Aisha – is another true legend; variously described as “The First Lady of Dub”, and “the closest thing we have to a female Bob Marley”. Raised among her father’s soundsystem, music is in her bones – and she’s been touring variously with Mad Professor since 2006.

Aisha also has her own relations to Scratch, having performed at London’s Meltdown festival the year that Lee Perry himself was curating. The duo will also be top and tailed by Bristol Hi-Fi’s Bee & Benn – brining classic, solid, heavyweight vibes to the night.

This match made in reggae heaven is coming next week – taking place at Old Market Assembly on Friday the 8th of September – so get involved while you can! A precious experience with legends like these isn’t likely to stay available for long, and you never know how long it’ll be before you get another chance to see these two.
