The Great Britain's 'Summer Lates' starts this Thursday

Posted on: 25 Jun 2024

The SS Great Britain’s beloved Summer Lates series is back in just a few days – with the first in the summer series taking place this Thursday, 27 June.

Summer Lates is SS Great Britain’s special gig series simultaneously celebrating the laid-back days of summer and Bristol’s local, home-grown talent (as well as some from further afield). Taking place throughout the dockyard of Brunel’s famous vessel, the events will include live bands, a summer BBQ, local beers, and a signature cocktail.

The series is partnered with Bristol Beer Factory, one of Bristol’s most well-established craft breweries, to help stock the bar, and are also partnered with Coffee Club, a local alternative gig promoters who have been putting on gigs since 2013 – as well as serving coffee on the Bristol Marina since 2020.

The series kicks off this Thursday, 27 June, with a performance from laid-back folk-and-soul band Sugarmoon, who have been described by Bristol Gig Guide as “extraordinary”. Joining Sugarmoon that day will be groovy indie-rock outfit Long Tonic, whose single ‘Settle Down’ has over 70,000 listens on Spotify.

Next in the series, on Thursday 4 July, will be explosive big-band folk dance merchants Gusto Gusto, who were finalists for 2023’s Australian Folk Music Awards’ “Artist of the Year”. Joining Gusto Gusto will be fellow Aussie folk band The Xaviers. Following up, on July 25, Summer Lates will play host to Pretend Friends, a local bunch of rebellious and irreverent fast folk, likely playing songs from their EP Bishopston Cowboy.

Finally, capping off the series on August 1 will be popular Bristol alternative folk & Americana artist (and Green Man Rising 2023’s crowned champion) Eve Appleton & her band, joined by “folk-tinged melancholia from both sides of the Severn” from artist Old Moll.

The SS Great Britain’s Summer Lates takes place from Thursday 27 June to Thursday 1 August. For more information, or to get your tickets, head to the SSGB website.
