Renowned dance group Diversity sprung from a group of friends aged between twelve and twenty-five, including four sets of brothers, in East London and Essex during the mid-2000s.
Two years later, they were sat waiting to audition for Britain’s Got Talent with troupe founder and spiritual leader Ashley Banjo declaring: “Apart from dancing, there’s university, school, college, IT solutions, telecoms engineers. We’re diverse; age, race, height, hairstyles; we’re just a diverse group of people”.
Their audition was a success with maximum yeses. The young dancers didn’t stop there as their striking street style, incorporating popping, contemporary hip-hop and breakdance, became a hit with the judges and Britain’s Got Talent viewers.
Diversity were eventually crowned champions following a dramatic final where they beat bookies' favourite Susan Boyle. After this remarkable rise, Diversity headed straight on tour, performing massive shows on US TV shows ‘The Today Show’ and ‘Larry King Live’ as well as a gig outside 10 Downing Street.
Banjo has since choreographed multiple successful shows for the group, including the critically acclaimed sell-out UK tour, ‘Born Ready’, and their powerful, politically charged Black Lives Matter performance on Britain’s Got Talent in 2020 - see below.
In 2022, Banjo was awarded an MBE for his extraordinary services to dance. As well as his work with Diversity, the talented choreographer is a committed educator and has hosted several TV shows.
Diversity return to The Bristol Hippodrome from Tuesday 27 February to Friday 1 March 2024 with their brand new show ‘Supernova’ as part of a lengthy UK and Ireland tour. Tickets for the first three dates can be found HERE while tickets for the Friday show go on sale this Friday 24 March.
