UPFEST have launched a new interactive map, designed to make it easier for people to discover the wealth of street art on offer in BS3 by detailing the locations of murals painted as part of the 75 walls and Six Sisters projects.
75 walls in 75 days, launched in May 2021 and originally intended to build up to UPFEST's annual festival, this year due to be held at the end of August, calls upon the talents of hundreds of local artists to paint 75 new murals in as many days.
For the second successive year, however, the festival has been cancelled. Undeterred by the bad news, the project is continuing, adding more life and colour to the streets of Bedminster.
75 walls is led by renowned artist Will Barras, this year's chosen Festival Artist, who kicked off the project with a new installation on the side of The Pony.
Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the festival was spread across three months to allow people to explore the new art in their own time and space. Speaking in May when announcing the ambitious mural project, Upfest co-founder Steve Hayles said:
“It’s great to be getting started on painting the murals on the walls of Bedminster as the first element of Upfest 2021 which has been made possible with a DCMS cultural recovery grant from Arts Council England, and a contribution from the Bedminster BID.
“To ensure we’re keeping visitors safe we’ve taken the decision to spread out the painting of the walls over the next three months, which means people can explore them and happen across our artists as they paint, in their own time and space.”
The map also details the location of the Six Sisters, the UK's largest mural project produced entirely by female artists.
Announced on International Women's Day in March of this year, UPFEST revealed its plan to complete the Six Sisters, which began in 2016 with a piece from Bristol-based artist and designer Gemma Compton.
The project was completed by esteemed local artists Lucas Antics and Ejits and unveiled on Friday 21 May. The bright murals now span all six buildings on a Victorian terrace in the heart of North Street.
