An acting titan and undisputed national treasure, Dame Judi Dench has conquered it all. She’s won an Oscar, a Tony Award, two Golden Globes, four British Academy Television Awards, six British Academy Film Awards, and seven Olivier Awards. She is widely regarded as one of Britain’s greatest-ever actresses.
Throughout her career, Dench has always had a deep relationship with Shakespeare, appearing in numerous productions both onstage and onscreen. This connection got closer still in 2021 when the BBC show Who Do You Think You Are? Discovered that Dench’s ancestors had seen a performance at Elsinore, the castle where Shakespeare’s Hamlet is set.
Brendan O’Hea is an actor and director who trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. O’Hea has acted and directed extensively at Shakespeare’s Globe as well as other prestigious theatres. He has also acted in films such as Quantum of Solace, Death at a Funeral and more.
The pair’s new book Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays The Rent is a witty, insightful journey through the works of the beloved bard. It has been described by fellow enthusiast Sir Kenneth Branagh as “a magical love letter to Shakespeare”.
