Don Letts has firmly established a reputation as an icon of the worlds of both music and film, boasting a substantial body of work from the 70s all the way through to today. His work has been exhibited in The Kitchen NYC, The Institute of Contemporary Art, London’s NFT and was honoured at BAM Festival and Milan Film Festival.
He rose to fame in the late 70s, single handedly turning a whole generation of punks onto reggae. It was whilst DJing at the first punk club The Roxy in ’77 that he made his first film, The Punk Rock Movie with Sex Pistols and The Clash among others. This led to a period of directing videos for artists as eclectic as Public Image and Bob Marley.
Letts then moved into documentaries, working with the likes of Gil Scot-Heron, The Jam, Sun Ra and The Clash as well as directing the legendary Jamaican film Dancehall Queen in 1997. In March 2003, he won a Grammy for his documentary ‘Westway To The World’. His most recent documentary was for Sir Paul McCartney’s ‘New’ project.
Along with his 2007 autobiography Culture Clash: Dread Meets Punk Rockers, Don Letts was the subject of the documentary Superstar Sound: The Rebel Dread. He also presents his weekly Culture Clash Radio show on BBC 6 Music and regularly tours all over the country.
