Speaking about the 2025 gala, the Slapstick Festival director Chris Daniels says: “Slapstick’s Silent Comedy Gala is always a highlight of the festival and 2025’s will be extra special – taking place in our 20th birthday year and on Valentine’s Day.”
To honour the date, three bona fide silent comedy gems will be screened, namely Laurel & Hardy’s final silent short Angora Love (1929), Charlie Chaplin’s increasingly relevant The Immigrant (1917) and, the main feature, Buster Keaton in Steamboat Bill Jr. (1928).
All these films are beautifully restored, showing on a giant screen and accompanied live by world-class musicians including the European Silent Screen Virtuosi, Bristol Ensemble members and Rick Wakeman – all guaranteed to spark laughter.
If that’s not enough, there will also be a flashback to the very first Gala in 2005, courtesy of Matinee Idles, featuring Doctor Who and Withnail and I star Paul McGann as well as members of DARTS – all in all a very lovely Valentine’s Day treat!
On top of The Gala, Slapstick Festival will be joined by a programme jam-packed with other screen comedy events when Slapstick returns to Bristol between Wednesday 12 and Sunday 16 February 2025. Keep an eye out for an announcement in mid-October!
