From Sally Cookson (director of A Monster Calls), comes this critically acclaimed Bristol Old Vic production of Ross Willis’ Wonder Boy.

Wonder Boy runs at Bristol Old Vic from Friday 6 until Saturday 21 September 2024.

Hitting the historic Bristol theatre from next week, this heart-warming and inspiring story about the power of communication was the winner of the 2023 Writers’ Guild Award for Best Play. The production uses ‘Creative Captioning’, meaning that spoken word will be converted into text on a screen behind the stage for deaf or hard-of-hearing audiences.

Sonny is 12 years old and living with a stammer. He’s finding his way in a world governed by vicious vowels, confusing consonants, and the biggest beast of them all – small talk. Sonny’s only friend is Captain Chatter, a comic book hero of his own creation, but, in reality, language is power, and Sonny must find a way to be heard.

When cast in his school production of Shakespeare’s Hamlet by his headteacher, Sonny soon discovers that the real heroes are closer than he thinks. Packed to the hilt with playful humour, dazzling visuals and riveting original music, this innovative show includes live creative captioning throughout.

The cast for this show includes Hilson Agbangbe (professional debut) as Sonny, Ciaran O’Breen (Lord of the Flies, Galwad) as Captain Chatter, Naia Elliott-Spence (professional debut) as Roshi, Jess Murrain (Neuroqueer, As You Like It) as Mum/Fish and Eva Scott (Work It Out, I Wanna Be Yours) as Wainwright.

Tickets for this show begin at £10 with special options also available for groups of more than eight and schools. The age recommendation for Wonder Boy is 12+ and it also has captioned and BSL-interpreted performances.
