Massive Attack trailblazed the trip-hop movement of the 1990s alongside fellow Bristol music legends Portishead and Tricky – an early Massive Attack member himself. The collective’s signature dark, hypnotic sound and incorporation of hip-hop and dub alongside jazz vocals came to define the genre for many.
The band were formed from the ashes of beloved Bristol Soundsystem and DJ collective The Wild Bunch by Andrew ‘Mushroom’ Vowles and Grant ‘Daddy G’ Marshall in 1988. Robert Del Naja (3D) soon joined and a series of singles – including the classic track ‘Unfinished Symphony’ – soon followed.
Debut album Blue Lines came in 1991 and became an instant cult classic with Protection following three years, featuring ‘Karmacoma’ and other deep cuts. The band resurfaced in 1998 with Mezzanine, a record boasting guest vocals from the likes of Cocteau Twins’ Elizabeth Frazer and dancefloor classics ‘Teardrop’ and ‘Inertia Creeps.’
Despite various line-up changes and hiatuses over the years, Massive Attack have remained at the peak of UK music ever since, collaborating with such musical legends as David Bowie, Madonna, Burial, Sinéad O’Connor and Roots Manuva as well as newer acts including Young Fathers, Ghost Poet and Fontaines DC.
‘Act 1.5’ aims to set a precedent for the music industry in being powered entirely by renewable energy. Support will come from legendary Grammy-Award-winning Atlanta rapper Killer Mike, Mercury Prize-nominated Irish folk band Lankum, actress and singer-songwriter Sam Morton, and Wild Bunch pioneer, DJ MILO.
