FELIX, one of Bristol’s top rising voices, is set to release his debut single this Wednesday – we dived in for a listen.

This Wednesday, Bristol-based artist FELIX is dropping his debut single, Leaving – the first from his upcoming self-titled debut EP.

FELIX is a well-regarded artist around Bristol’s gigging scene, seen everywhere from Exchange to the Golden Lion and Lost Horizon to Crofters Rights (as well as countless acoustic gigs across the great Bristolian outdoors) – and with his debut EP, FELIX, in production for three years, we’re likely to see the benefits of that experience.

The last three years have seen FELIX working on the EP alongside Oscar-nominated producer Nick Southwood – known for his work with Adam Levine on the song Lost Stars – and Brit-nominated songwriter Shelley Poole – one half of Alisha’s Attic and writer for stars like Janet Jackson, Massive Attack and Mark Ronson.

Described as melding heart-rending vocals with powerful indie-rock arrangements, FELIX fuels his ear-worming anthem with real life experiences that lie just below the surface of his heart-rending lyrics.

The single kicks off with intimate, warm fingerstyle guitar reminiscent of a softer indie artist like Nana Grizol or Hayley Heynderyickx, before opening up into a kind of emotive, grand dreampop that gives way to FELIX’s heartfelt vocals and a driving drumbeat evocative of the feeling of running away.

Indeed, whilst discussing the debut single, FELIX himself described it as encapsulating ‘that feeling of getting out of something toxic, after far too long. It’s getting in your car to drive away from a bad situation and not looking back, turning the radio on and letting every emotion flood out of you’.

Leaving is out this Wednesday, May 17 – with the full debut EP launching in just a few months on July 11.
