Posted on: 20 Apr 2023

Attention young linguists! On Monday, independent children’s publisher ‘b small’ this week launched The Young Language Learner Award 2023 with applications closing on Monday 5 June.

This immensely popular award, which is returning this year for the fourth time, has been designed specifically to encourage linguists between the ages of 6 and 11 to develop their language skills in a fun and accessible format.

Find out more about the award and apply now HERE.

To enter the competition children will be provided with a story template to pen their own original tale in a foreign language of their choice with their own accompanying words and pictures. This fun, inclusive award not only develops language skills but also aims to encourage storytelling and creativity from an early age.

The reaction to the first two awards in 2014 and 2017 was overwhelmingly positive and, after reviving the awards last year, b small received great feedback from parents, teachers, and children alike. Indeed, teachers even used the award as a classroom resource to inject engagement and creativity into all levels of foreign language teaching.

To celebrate the coronation of King Charles on Saturday 6 May, this year’s competition theme will be ‘Celebration’. A resource pack on the b small website includes a story and comic template, notes for teachers/parents/tutors with hints and tips and a downloadable entry form to submit the finished story. Download yours here.

Entry to the competition closes on Monday 5 June with the winners announced on Monday 26 June. b small will publish the winning entry on their website. The winner will receive 10 language learning books from the publishing company with the second and third runners-up receiving 5 and 2 books respectively. Enter the competition HERE.

b small is an award-winning children’s publisher who, for over 30 years, has been releasing books that celebrate childish enthusiasm for discovering new things with non-fiction and activity books covering everything from science to foreign languages.
