Watershed to host a preview of Mark Jenkin’s new film Enys Men

Enys Men, the follow-up to Jenkin’s critically acclaimed breakthrough feature Bait is set for a special screening at Watershed in January, followed by a Q&A with Jenkin himself.

 

Enys Men will screen at Watershed, Bristol on Saturday 7 January at 5:30 PM.

 

This sophomore film is billed as a sinister folk horror from the brain of BAFTA award-winning writer and director Mark Jenkin. The Bristol preview of this eagerly anticipated piece will come just six days prior to the general release of the film.

Jenkin burst onto the scene in 2002 when his debut film, Golden Burn won the Frank Copplestone First Time Director Award. Since then, Jenkin has become known as one of the most innovative filmmakers at work in the UK today.

 

A visionary and innovative director, Jenkin is a native son of Cornwall with 2019 feature Bait exploring the deep-rooted tensions between tourists and locals in a Cornish fishing village. The film proved a massive critical success thanks to its originality and distinctive style (it was shot on 16 mm) with Mark Kermode calling it ‘a genuine modern masterpiece’.

 

Bait went on to win a multitude of awards, most notably a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. Jenkin’s follow-up Enys Men is set to hit theatres in January 2023; the horror takes the viewer back to 1973 and a remote island just off the Cornish coast.

 

Again shot on 16 mm but this time in colour and post-synched sound, the film looks set to be yet another bold and experimental work set within Jenkin’s native landscape. Almost dialogue-free, Enys Man is a throwback to the folk horrors of the 70s with references to folklore and nature throughout.

The preview at Watershed on Saturday 7 January will also feature an introduction and Q&A with Jenkin, it will be hosted by writer and film critic Tara Judah. Tickets for this event can be found here.
