Bristol City announce first pre-season friendly as they ramp up summer plans

Posted on: 25 May 2022

With preparations for next season well underway, Nigel Pearson and co will be staying in the Southwest for their first friendly match of the summer.

The Robins will play League One’s Plymouth Argyle at Home Park on Saturday 16 July as part of their build-up to the 2022/23 season.

Information on ticket prices and release dates will be announced over the next few weeks, check out the Bristol City website to keep up to date with all club news.

After a slow and sometimes turgid first two-thirds of the season, City ended on a positive with three wins, a draw and one loss in their final five games. An astonishing 5-0 win at the end of April, in particular, ignited a rare party atmosphere at Ashton Gate.

The standout performer has clearly been Andreas Weimann (pictured below); with 32 league goal involvements, a PFA Championship Player of the Year nomination and a return to the Austrian national setup – all off the back of a serious ACL injury.

The individual performances of exciting youngsters Alex Scott, Antoine Semenyo and Ayman Benarous, too, are a source of hope amongst City fans – so long as the club can keep the former two on their books.

However, a season finish of 17th shows there is much work to be done for manager Nigel Pearson. Season preparations are well underway for next season with the retained list seeing long-serving winger Callum O’Dowda leave the club and Timm Klose, Robbie Cundy and Andy Kind (player-coach) all in talks for new deals.

Transfer activity is also well underway: the club have announced the signing of Oxford United utility man Mark Sykes (pictured below) and have been linked with the likes of Forest Green’s League Two Player of the Year Kane Wilson, Reading midfielder Andy Rinomhota as well as centre backs Curtis Davies of Derby County and Fraser Horsfall of Northampton Town.

City are also planning a busy schedule of pre-season fixtures and have announced that they will face Plymouth Argyle at Home Park on Saturday 16 July. The two teams also met last summer for a friendly, which The Robins won 1-0 thanks to Weimann's second half goal.

Tickets are yet to go on sale for the match and there are sure to be a slew of friendlies, both local and further afield, still to be announced – head to the Bristol City website to keep up to date with all the club’s summer business.
