Make your own wax records this weekend at Arnolfini's one-off workshop

Posted on: 23 May 2022

Bristol-based sonic explorers Copper Sounds are hosting the event as part of EP/64 Grand Final weekend.

The Arnolfini is hosting an exclusive record-making workshop this weekend, inviting participants to create their own 7" dubplates using turntables, speakers and frequencies to carve into wax.

Organised by local record producers Copper Sounds, the workshop will be taking place as part of the eagerly-anticipated EP/64 Grand Final, with the ambitious improvisational music project set to conclude with a huge two-day showcase on Friday 27 & Saturday 28 May.

Tickets for the record-making workshop, taking place from midday on Saturday, are still available in limited numbers - find out more and get yours here.

As part of the event, attendees will have the opportunity to design their own record sleeve as well as cut their very own wax record.

The hosts will provide a demonstration on how to use a turntable as a drawing tool, and will then work collaboratively with the group to help create individual sleeves using various techniques.

The second element to the workshop, based on similar principles, will see Copper Sounds assist in the creation of the wax records themselves, allowing each participant to walk away with their very own wax dubplate, in its very own sleeve.

Based in Bristol, Copper Sounds explore the physical and visual nature of sound, through designing, making and playing unique objects and instruments.

As experimental record manufacturers the team have, so far, made records out everything from copper to volcanic rock, chalk, ceramic and more.

Their latest workshop, presented in collaboration with The Brunswick Club and Schwet, is taking place as part of the conclusion of EP/64, an improvised music project launched in 2016 by raw vocalist Dali de Saint Paul.

EP/64 was established with the goal of playing 64 improvised gigs, each one featuring a wide range of local musicians and visual artists.

The diversity of de Saint Paul’s guests, as well as the frontwoman’s artistic vision, makes for a live performance that is experimental and wild in equal measure.

The project has gained a zealous cult following and playing shows with the likes of The Evil Usses, Franco Franco & Kinlaw and LICE.

Now, as part of its 64th and final show, EP/64 will invite all past collaborators back for a special double-header at Arnolfini on Friday 27 & Saturday 28 May.
