Last chance to explore new Donna Huanca exhibition at Arnolfini

Posted on: 21 Apr 2022

Running until the end of May, the brand-new exhibition sees Huanca head to Bristol for the first time.

Arnolfini is approaching the final month of CUEVA DE COPAL, the latest exhibition from acclaimed contemporary artist Donna Huanca.

This new and immersive site-specific installation explores – through a range of differing mediums – humans’ physical relationship with the external world, and takes an interdisciplinary look at the human body.

Open until Sunday 29 May, the exhibition is free to enter with bookable slots and walk-ins available too. Head to the Arnolfini website to find out more.

Born in Chicago, Huanca studied at Städelschule, Frankfurt as well as the Skowhegan School of Painting and is now based in Berlin. She is a contemporary artist with an emphasis on site-specific, interdisciplinary practice.

Using a mix of painting, sculpture, performance, choreography, video and sensory interventions, her work explores and focuses on the human body. Huanca’s installations are built around each site, creating an open conversation between environment and art.

Her latest exhibition, CUEVA DE COPAL at Arnolfini, plunges visitors into a cocoon-esque space that encourages audiences to reflect on their own relationship with their environment.

Huanca uses sound, scent and texture to ascend the limits of performance, sculpture, photography and painting. Within the darkness of the piece, the bodily forms take on new shapes and lives.

The piece integrates ideas and themes previously explored in Huanca’s previous installations that include transforming the early 18th-century palace of the Belvedere Museum, Vienna and the desert landscape surrounding Ballroom Marfa, Texas.

CUEVA DE COPAL is running at Arnolfini until 29 May and is free to enter, slots can be booked online or, alternatively, walk-ins are available.

Arnolfini, as always, has a crammed schedule. Exhibitions Paula Rego: Subversive Stories, Polly Braden: Holding the Baby and Sam Francis: Let the Idea Travel are all running currently with a variety of films also on show.

Head to the gallery's What's On page for a comprehensive list, or head to the Arnolfini website for more information on the venue.
