The biennial festival sees performers from all over the world descend upon the southwest.

Bristol's renowned international festival of contemporary theatre, Mayfest, returns this Spring running from Friday 13 to Saturday 29 May 2022, once again promising a diverse programme of ambitious, boundary-blurring performances.

Described by The Guardian as "a mix of work so tasty it makes you want to up sticks and move to Bristol permanently," the festival's eclectic curations have garnered widespread praise since hosting its first edition 12 years ago.

Led by creative producers Kate Yedigaroff and Matthew Austin, Mayfest bills itself as 'a cross-city celebration that promotes the creative vitality of Bristol and explores the parameters of the city as a creative playground.'

Known for curating lineups of vibrant, unusual, playful and ambitious performances, Mayfest aims to cultivate connections between artists, audiences, participants and venues.

Organisers have also described the festival as a champion of the "voices and experiences of a diverse international community of artists who ask brave questions about how we live in a modern world."

2022's Mayfest will be the first since before the pandemic after 2020's edition was forced to cancel as Bristol entered the first of three national lockdowns.

In previous years, Mercury Prize and Ivor Novello award-nominated poet, writer, playwright and musician Kae Tempest has performed, with esteemed New York-based ensemble theatre company Banana Bag and Bodice also bringing one of their unique and original productions emphasizing text, music and design across the pond.

Belarusian underground theatre group, Belarus Free Theatre has also performed at the festival, with the national theatres of both Wales and Scotland also bringing their unique celebrations of local culture to the festival.

The programme for 2022's Mayfest is yet to be announced, so be sure to sign up to the festival's mailing list to receive any updates.
