Music Venue Trust launch #GoLocal campaign to support grassroots music

Posted on: 10 Jan 2022

The campaign group are promoting the support of local music venues during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The Music Venue Trust have today (Monday 10 January) launched #GoLocal, a new nationwide campaign to encourage music fans to safely enjoy live events at their local grassroots venues.

In response to the latest coronavirus data and guidance released by the government, #GoLocal puts emphasis on enjoying live music close to home, avoiding mass transport and large crowds associated with larger events.

The campaign becomes the latest call to arms fronted by the Music Venue Trust during the pandemic, as the organisation continue to raise awareness of the dangers facing the UK's grassroots music sector.

Speaking on today's campaign launch, Music Venue Trust CEO, Mark Davyd, said: “From day one of this crisis we have liaised directly with government and medical experts and have been at the heart of the discussions around how to stage responsible live music events and reopen every venue safely.

“It is clear to us, given the current data available to us,  that the safest way to enjoy live music at present is to do so at a local level, avoiding mass transport and large crowds of people.

“We see this difficult and uncertain period as an opportunity to put the focus firmly back on local music venues and to encourage people to investigate the many amazing opportunities to safely experience live music within their own communities.”

In Bristol, venues of all shapes and sizes have faced major struggles to remain in business during the coronavirus pandemic.

Some of the city's best-loved grassroots venues, including The Louisiana, Strange Brew and Exchange, have launched crowdfunding campaigns over the past 18 months, while others opened outdoor spaces while Covid restrictions prevented them from opening at full capacity.

In the coming weeks, a selection of Bristol artists and venues will be taking part in the second round of Revive Live, a nationwide gig series set up by the Music Venue Trust to welcome returning fans back to reopening venues.
