Slapstick Festival is returning to Bristol this winter

Posted on: 06 Jan 2022

The festival returns in person after successfully moving online in 2021 because of the pandemic.

Slapstick's latest festival, featuring a handful of Britain's best loved comics including David Mitchell, Sally Phillips and Stephen Mangan, will take over multiple venues in Bristol across five days this month, beginning on Wednesday 26 January and ending on Sunday 30 January.

Aiming to introduce a new audience to silent and classic comedy, the event will also showcase archive comedy predominately from the silent era of film (1895-1930), including movies by the legendary Buster Keaton, whose daring stunts marked him out as one of the greatest physical comics of all time.

Tickets for David Mitchell's Top Comedy Moments, Slapstick Divas and the Silent Comedy Gala can be found here. All other tickets can be purchased from the respective box offices of participating venues, so be sure to take a good look at Slapstick's website and find all of the information you need.

Over the course of five days, Slapstick has curated a varied programme of events, with appearances from much loved comedians including satirist Armando Ianucci, Richard Herring and Ronni Ancona.

Silent Comedy Gala, described as a special triple-bill of silent comedy classics on the big screen accompanied by live music, is hosted by Stephen Mangan, while Sally Phillips leads Slapstick Divas, an evening of rarely seen silent comedies celebrating outstanding leading women.

Elsewhere, a selection of classic silent movies from the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Max Linder will be shown, with other titles such as Silent Ozu: Days of Youth, The Patsy and It's Only Funny If It Hurts being screened.

Festival director Chris Daniels said in a statement: “This is definitely shaping up to be our most exciting programme to date. Given that we’ve been away for almost two years and that so many people have been having such a terrible time living through this pandemic we really want to deliver something very special this year.

Having Stephen (Mangan) onboard as the host of our flagship gala event too is wonderful, Steven is such a passionate admirer of Keaton and he absolutely loves silent comedy! What’s more is he’s a hugely talented comic actor and presenter, so he’s the perfect host for us..”
