Friendly Records are hosting a series of intimate live shows this month

Posted on: 07 Dec 2021

The team behind Bedminster's renowned record store have put together a stellar live programme to build up to the festive season.

Friendly Records' short-but-sweet December live series is officially underway, bringing a selection of renowned artists to their Bedminster HQ and independent Stokes Croft arts space The Cube in the coming weeks.

Having opened on the weekend with a headline show from esteemed composer and live performer Alison Cotton at The Cube, Friendly Records are set to bring Liverpudlians Nick Ellis & Roy to BS3 on Thursday 9, before hosting their inaugural Winter Guitar Jamboree two days later on Sunday 12.

Read on for a quick rundown of two live shows coming up this week, and get your tickets via the links in the headings.

Nick Ellis & Roy @ Friendly Records | Thursday 9 December

The second of three winter warmers will see the Friendly Records team welcome the return of friends Nick Ellis & Roy, two travelling troubadours from Liverpool armed with an extensive catalogue of music and spoken word.

A renowned British acoustic songwriter, Nick Ellis' rhythmic finger-picking has the steadiness of a seasoned busker, his sound reaching back to Davy Graham's guitar baladry of the black and white early 60s.

Nick's last album, 2018's Speakers' Corner, was awarded four stars by MOJO, while Louder Than War marked him as "one of Liverpool's great singer-songwriters of the modern age."

Roy, meanwhile, is a born storyteller. An observer of local culture, that of North Liverpool in particular, his explorations of everyday history traverse the breadth of modern society as well as his own inner reflections.

Doors open at 19:30, with tickets on sale now for just £8 apiece.

Winter Guitar Jamboree w/ C Joynes, Paul Bradley & Glenn Kimpton @ Friendly Records | Sunday 12 December

Closing Friendly Records' brief December series will see the store host a warm evening of explorative, instrumental guitar playing as part of their inaugural Winter Guitar Jamboree on Sunday 12 December.

The team will be welcoming genre-spanning, multi-disciplinary guitarist C Joynes to Bedminster as he celebrates the release of his latest record, Poor Boy on the Wire.

Drawing on a broad spectrum of influences, from overdriven garage blues to West African fuzzed guitar lines, traditional English folk and more, the album continues Joynes' rich vein of creative form.

Providing support on the night will be celebrated local guitarist Paul Bradley, joined by friend and long-term collaborator Glenn Kimpton for a project driven by improvised, stell-strung instrumentation.

A real festive jamboree in nature as well as name, Friendly's evening get-together will feature carol-singing and mulled wine, with records playing from the outset and handmade Christmas cards available on-site courtesy of The Letterpress Collective.
