Insane Root Theatre’s Hansel and Gretel at Arnos Vale Cemetery kicks off tonight

Posted on: 01 Dec 2021

From the creators of site-specific hits such as ‘Rumpelstiltskin at the New Room’ and ‘Romeo & Juliet in Eastville Park Swimming Pool’ comes a stunning adaptation of this dark yet family friendly tale.

Acclaimed writer/actor Saikat Ahamed (‘Three Kings’, ‘Strictly Balti’) and composer Ellie Showering (‘Rumpelstiltskin…’, ‘The Tempest’) team up for this immersive walking production through the magical woodland of Arnos Vale.

The show is running from 1 December 2021 to 1 January 2022 and tickets can be found on the Insane Root Theatre website.

“As darkness falls, follow us through the magical illuminated woodland where not everything is as it seems.

Discover a strange cottage and a mysterious figure with an unsavoury appetite, and revel with us in this celebration of the imagination…but will you trust a trail of breadcrumbs to find your way home?”

Arnos Vale Cemetery is the perfect location for this adaptation of the Grimm’s Fairytale. Designed in the style of a Greek Necropolis in the 1800s, the Victorian Garden cemetery boasts 45 green acres and a plethora of hidden paths and spaces slap bang in the middle of Bristol.

Insane Root Theatre is a Bristol-based theatre company and charity specialising in reimagining classic stories in site-specific locations. Through this, they aim to make theatre inclusive and personal, creating shows that are immersive and unforgettable.

Tickets for the site-specific show are between £12 and £20.50 with performances beginning every 30 minutes from 16:00. Each performance has a maximum capacity of 30 people and a running time of 55 minutes. The age recommendation is 7+.

Hot chocolate, mulled wine and snacks will be available from the Arnos Vale Cemetery Cafe until 20:30 and I Scream Tacos will be serving gluten-free Mexican street food on certain days. Head to the Arnos Vale website for more details.

Hansel and Gretal at Arnos Vale Cemetery begins tonight (Wednesday 1 December) and tickets be purchased from the Insane Root Theatre website.
