Catch Chubby and the Gang at Exchange next month

The punk rockers will be in Bristol on 17 December as part of a massive UK and Ireland tour, continuing the momentum of their sophomore album The Mutt’s Nuts.

 

One of the UK’s most popular (and noisy) up-and-coming bands, Chubby and the Gang, will be playing Exchange in December.

Formed in 2019, the band is made up of Charlie “Chubby Charles” Manning-Walker, guitarists Ethan Stahl and Tom Hardwick, bassist Megan Brooks Mills and drummer Joe McMahon.

 

They appeared to emerge out of nowhere when, in 2020, they completed two tours of the US as well as releasing their debut album, Speed Kills. Consisting of members of various British Hardcore revival bands, Chubby and the Gang caught a mood at the right time and never looked back.

 

While there are a range of influences at play within their music (punk, oi!, hardcore, pub rock); their material is always visceral, fast paced and abrasive. Their tracks are at once fun and chaotic, with deeply political undertones that remain true to the band’s musical lineage.

 

Chubby and the Gang’s second record, The Mutt’s Nuts, was released in August this year on Partisan Records (IDLES and Fontaines D.C.) to critical acclaim. The album maintains the chaotic swagger of Speed Kills but is a clear development with Manning-Walker’s vocals decidedly more melodic at points.

 

The praise of massive publications such as Pitchfork and Rolling Stone appear to be partly responsible for Chubby and the Gang’s meteoric journey from the perpetually ignored UK hardcore scene to world-wide acclaim.

 

However, the real reason behind the band’s quick ascendency is their aggressively direct approach to their craft through anarchic music with catchy hook. Known for their high-energy and thunderous live shows, the band’s appearance in Bristol next month is sure to be a riotous one. 

 

As well as their Exchange show, Chubby and the Gang will be playing venues in: Tunbridge Wells, Margate, Dover, Portsmouth, Brighton, Norwich, Nottingham, Leeds, Newcastle, Glasgow, Cardiff, Manchester, London, Dublin and Belfast before heading to Europe.
