FareShare South West relaunch emergency FoodStock drive for winter months

Posted on: 21 Oct 2021

The charity are building a huge stockpile of ambient food to maintain support for vulnerable people across the region.

FareShare South West have launched their emergency FoodStock 2021 campaign, amid concerns about the ongoing supply of food to the charity linked to the UK's current HGV driver crisis.

Based in Bristol and covering the entire South West, FareShare is the largest food distribution charity in the region, and actively distributes food to more than 350 frontline organisations.

FoodStock 2021 is a direct follow-up to FareShare's FoodStock 2020, a five-month food drive that saw the team redistribute more than 431 tonnes of food to people in need in its final few weeks alone.

Speaking this week on the launch of FoodStock 2021, FareShare South West CEO, Julian Mines, said: “We knew that this winter would present challenges, with the rising cost of living, the complete end to furlough, and with the reduction in universal credit.

“That is why we planned to run FoodStock 2021, boosting levels of food reaching those most in need during the winter months.

“However, with the additional challenges created by the HGV driver crisis, and with our expectation that this disruption will remain for some time, it is clear that the scale of our FoodStock 2021 operation will need to be more significant.

“The emergency food that will be amassed as part of the operation, along with the increased funds we hope the campaign will generate, will mean we can both bolster deliveries to organisations working with the most vulnerable over winter”

FareShare will once again be aiming to redistribute enough food for one million meals across the region between now and January 2022, and will kick off their operation by sourcing ambient produce from across the food industry.

Juian and the rest of the team are encouraging individuals and local businesses to consider their own fundraising ideas and activities, help raise awareness of FoodStock 2021 or browse volunteering options to support the project directly.
