St George's Bristol to host live concert celebrating pioneering female artists

Posted on: 09 Aug 2021

Eight Bristol-based artists will be paying tribute to some of the world's most iconic musical women.

An all-new live show dedicated to the musical accomplishments of a selection of renowned female artists is coming to St George's concert hall on Sunday 19 September.

The first date on a short nationwide tour will see a collective of eight Bristol-based musicians celebrate the likes of Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell and Bjork through creative interpretations of their music.

Tickets for What She Said, organised and promoted by the Bristol International Jazz & Blues Festival, are on sale now and can be found here.

From lesser-known women fundamental to the big-band scene of the 1930s, right through to the trailblazing vocalists and musicians of the 70s, 80s, 90s and present day, the performance is set to showcase a vibrant collection of sounds and styles.

The show will be led by five leading Bristol-based musicians; vocalists Sara Colman and Tammy Payne, percussionist Katya Gorrie, Ruth Hammond on woodwind, keyboards and vocals, and Rebecca Nash on piano, keyboard and vocals.

Colman, Payne, Gorrie, Hammond and Nash will each be taking work produced by their chosen female composer and translating it through their own contemporary lens.

Drummer Lizy Exell, guitarist Steve Banks and multi-instrumentalist Will Harris complete the full eight-person arrangement.

As well as spanning a range of musical eras, What She Said is expected to delve into a broad spectrum of sounds and styles, from jazz and folk to pop, rock and country.

Following their opening performance at St George's on Sunday 19 September, the tour will arrive at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff, the Wesley Memorial Church in Oxford, Calstock Arts and the Exeter Phoenix.
