Bristol City Centre BID lead calls for extra support for hospitality businesses

Posted on: 30 Nov 2020

The city's hospitality industry is facing more difficulty as a result of the government's Tier 3 restrictions.

Bristol's City Centre BID have officially called for 'special support' measures for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses as the city approaches the end of lockdown but the beginning of new Tier 3 coronavirus restrictions.

Leading independent trade association UKHospitality has already warned that the new Tier 3 system will result in as many of 94% of hospitality businesses becoming unviable by March 2021.

Bristol was confirmed to be placed under Tier 3 as part of a government announcement last week, meaning its hospitality businesses will be forced to remain closed until the situation is reviewed.

In response to the latest round of coronavirus measures and the potentially devastating impact they could have on UK business, a nationwide 'Bounce Back Better' campaign has been launched to provide a vital lifeline for owners and operators.

The scheme's manifesto supports lobbying for four key packages:

  • A one-off grant of up to £15,000 for eligible hospitality, retail and leisure businesses in Tier 2 and Tier 3

  • A pause of National Insurance employer contributions for furloughed employees

  • An extension of 100% business rates holiday for 2021/22

  • An extension of the VAT Reduction Scheme.

Speaking on their support for the Bounce Back Better campaign, Bristol City Centre BID's Operations Director, Keith Rundle, said Bristol businesses have already "suffered hugely" from COVID restrictions, with many imposed at short notice.

"With Bristol now being placed in Tier 3 the pressure has significantly increased with the effective cancellation of their key Christmas trading period," he explained.

"There is no certainty for hospitality, leisure or retail that the New Year will bring relief or greater certainty with the continuing threat of further lockdowns or restrictions."
