Bristol sandwich supplier adapts to feed minds and mouths over lockdown

When the global pandemic hit the UK back in March, the Real Wrap team had to adapt fast.

Under normal trading circumstances, food to go manufacturer Real Wrap has been supplying universities, hospitals and corporate cafeterias nationwide with a range of wholesome pre-made sandwiches and hot eat products since its launch in 2010.

But, with demand severely impacted during the first UK lockdown, they looked at how they could not only change their business model to survive but also support the community in the most effective way possible.

In line with footballer Marcus Rashford's child food poverty campaign, the business pivoted regular operations to produce replacement school meal boxes - supplying over 5000 to vulnerable children across South Wales on a weekly basis.

Now, while facing an indeterminate second national lockdown, the business is going one step further.

With their new meal boxes for kids, they're not only ensuring vulnerable children get at least one nutritious meal each day, but also teaching them about the importance of good mental health and physical wellbeing.

"Our experience from the first lockdown really bought home just how vulnerable a lot of children in our country are," says Real Wrap's co-founder, Jason Howell.

"And it's not just a lack of nutrition that's a problem now, the national lockdown has created further issues in terms of mental health.

"Isolation can be just as damaging on child wellbeing as diet. We saw a bad situation that we wanted to improve and close the gap any way we can."

To combat the problem, Real Wrap have teamed up with a group of experts to make their new meal boxes about more than food.

Each box contains a range of activity cards to help children learn about the nutritional value of the meals inside, and there will be links to online videos that they can watch to encourage an active lifestyle.

Amongst fun and engaging activities, children will learn different exercise routines, sports skills and circus tricks that the company hopes will have a positive impact on wellbeing during another turbulent time for the country.

“The initiative is not only about teaching children the importance of eating well but to look after their minds and bodies too – not just for now but for the future," says Howell.

Real Wrap meal boxes are available to purchase nationwide - for more information, or to get in touch with the team, head to the Real Wrap website.
