Delve into Bristol history and identity with M Shed’s ‘Brizzle Week’

Join Bristol history museum M Shed in exploring local identity and lingo with 'Brizzle Week'. 

 

Is Bristol unique? Is it possible to define being a Bristolian?

 

These are the sort of questions M Shed will ask during its week-long celebration of local identity, Brizzle Week.

 

Running from Monday 21 September until Friday 25 September, Brizzle Week will feature a series of virtual events and activities, including free-to-attend online talks, delivered via Zoom. 

 

Here’s what to expect.

Bristol

In 2019, M Shed retail assistant Claudia Collins packed a vintage suitcase full of souvenirs from Bristol.

 

She took it 3,879 miles across the pond to Bristol, Tennessee and Bristol, Virginia in a quest to share Bristol connections.

 

On Tuesday 22 September, join Claudia in a free, late lunch talk via Zoom as she chats about the trip and the Bristolians she met.

 

Next up, on Thursday 24 September, discover the geographical, social and industrial factors that have determined the look, shape and feel of the city as we know it today.

 

This late lunch online talk will be delivered by Gail Boyle, Senior Curator of Archaeology and World Cultures.

 

Boyle has enjoyed a successful career as a museum archaeologist spanning more than 30 years, playing a leading role in the delivery of M Shed.

 

What defines a Bristolian? Has this changed over time - and will it continue to change? And what, if anything, is unique about the city and its people?

 

Find out on Thursday 24 September with a free online panel discussion chaired by Patrick Hart, Station Manager of local community radio station, BCfm.

 

On the panel, you’ll find pop music artist and creative director at Filwood Community Centre, Makala Cheung, Bristol journalist and filmmaker Neil Maggs and Lloyd Russell, charity worker and winner of the Bristol Diversity Awards.
